There are many practice areas within radiologic technology, and requirements vary. However, in general, the steps to a rad tech career are:

    1. Complete a training program in your practice area, typically as part of an associate degree. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees are also an option, and may be required for some practice areas.
    2. Pass the relevant qualifying professional exam, such as those offered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB), or the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
    3. Apply for professional certification through one of the above organizations. This may be required by your state licensing board, but even where it’s not required, certification can help you stand out when applying for jobs.
    4. Apply for a license through your state radiologic technology certification board, if required.
